JAMES W. GUTHRIE
James W, Guthrie is Lynn University’s first Presidential Fellow and a Professor in the Ross College of Education
Professor Guthrie comes to Lynn University from Dallas Texas where he has been a Senior Fellow at the George W. Bush Institute (a part of the Presidential Library). Prior to this position he served as the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Nevada, as an endowed Professor of Public Policy and Education and Education School Dean at the University of California Berkeley (27 years), as an endowed Professor of Public Policy and Education at Vanderbilt University (15 years), and a Visiting Irving R. Melbo Distinguished Fellow at the University of Southern California.
Prior to his academic career, professor Guthrie earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and received postgraduate training in Economics and Public Finance from Harvard and Oxford Universities. Upon his 1958 graduation from Stanford, Jim was employed as the Manager of the Awahnee Hotel in Yosemite and as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of American Airlines. He also served as a speechwriter for President Lyndon Baines Johnson and drafted the Public Broadcasting Act. He has recently started a high tech company, ValueMetrics, responsible for applying voice recognition and speech scoring systems to education. While at the Lynn, he will divide his time between San Francisco and Boca Raton Florida
Professor Guthrie is the Founder of the Language Power Institute at Lynn University, a nonprofit organization the mission of which is to facilitate English language fluency among those who are not native English speakers. The Language Power Institute has initiated a number of language-related R&D activities at Lynn aimed at (1) enhancing admission decisions, (2) assisting tutors in the Institute for Learning and Achievement, and (3) training of English as a Second Language teachers.
Lynn was particularly attractive for Professor Guthrie because of its innovative and collaborative culture and leading edge use of instructional technology.
